Ubosot

Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai

The ubosot of Wat Mahathat, a pillared hall located in front of the sanctuary, is dominated by a large seated Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra. Behind the ubosot is the main sanctuary, whose tall lotus-bud chedi was built by King Lo Thai in 1345 to house two relics from Sri Lanka. The prang (tower) of the chedi is visible at the top of the photo. Partially hidden by foliage at photo left is the south mondop (hall) with its tall standing Buddha. The corresponding north mondop is out of the photo to the right.
