Wetkyi-in Gubyaukgyi

Pagan, Burma
1211-1230

The Gubyaukgyi in Wetkyi-in (there is another temple named Gubyaukgyi in Myinkaba) was built on two levels. The tower, of pyramidal South Indian type, is similar to Mahabodhi in Pagan, the two temples being probably contemporaneous, and both modeled after the Mahabodhi in Bodhgaya, India. The inside of the temple is decorated with wall frescoes. Many of these were carried off in 1899 by Th. Thomann, who sold them to various collectors and museums in Europe.

Alternate spellings: Wetkyi-Inn, Kubyaukgyi
