Seated Buddha Image

Manuha, Pagan
11th-13th century

This is one of several monumental seated Buddhas that fill the interior space. Strachan (p. 46) dates them to the 11th century, although they have been repaired and repainted so drastically that one can hardly imagine what the originals must have looked like. Here, the Buddha's meditative gaze seems directed towards some interior spiritual vision.
