Shiva and Parvati on Nandi

East Lintel of North Tower (Front Row), Muang Tam
Baphuon style, 11th century

This carving is notable for its naivete of execution. Shiva, riding the bull Nandi, is holding a trident, with Uma (looking rather like a sock-puppet) draped in his lap. Other humans and animals fill the scene. Below, garlands issue from the mouths of animals whose rear legs are held by a kala, as at Phnom Rung.
