Crowned Buddha

Bronze, 79 cm (2'7")
2d half of the 12th century
National Museum of Cambodia

Images of the Crowned Buddha are, in some sense, iconographically incorrect - the Buddha should canonically be portrayed as a simple monk, whereas the Bodhisattvas are depicted with crowns and jewelled robes - but nevertheless, in 11th-12th century Pagan and Angkor, the Buddha could be adorned with crowns and jewels, a murti that ultimately derives from 9th-10th century Nalanda (Wibke Lobo, Millennium of Glory, p. 270).
