Dvaravati (Wat Phra Men), 8-9c

The land of Dvaravati, in what is now central Thailand, was primarily Buddhist in culture. This amusing Yaksha (nature-spirit) is an example of how animist religious iconography became assimilated to Hinduism and Buddhism in south and southeast Asia.
