Wat MaheyongAyutthaya
The principal chedi (stupa) is supported symbolically by eighty sculpted elephants, which are distributed around the base of its substantial platform. The elephants' trunks have now mostly disappeared, and their bodies have been heavily restored. A yellow honorific cloth around the stupa indicates that the structure is venerated, and that some active worship is taking place there. The body of this stupa is fashioned in Sri Lankan style: a bell-shaped dome, a square harmika (railing) atop the dome, and a chattra (honorific umbrella) above the harmika. |
