Surya

Northwest corner pavilion
Angkor Wat

This relief of the sun god, Surya, is part of a series of planetary deities in the northwest corner pavilion of the third enclosure. The sun god drives a two-horse chariot in this carving, although a seven-horse chariot is more standard. It is also customary to show a small figure actually driving the chariot; here, the charioteer is not visible.

The northwest and southwest corner pavilions are full of mythological reliefs (the other two corner pavilions are uncarved), although present conditions of lighting and restoration (including scaffolding) make proper observation and photography difficult.
