The two large asuras (diagram, #2 and #3) to the right of Ravana look very similar and their identities are unknown. Recently, Mannikka (p.165) suggested that Asura #2 could be Vishnu in disguise. This is based upon the figure's being shadowed during the winter solistice. It is also consistent with a version of the myth that has Vishnu helping the asuras, in order to assure the success of the churning.

The relief was constructed by first building a wall of large sandstone blocks, accurately fitted together; the outlines of the blocks can be seen clearly in these and other photos. The surface was carved once the blocks were in place.
