AsuraChurning of the Sea of Milk
This is one of the generic asuras who participate in the churning. According to Mannikka (p.161) there are 91 of them in total, a significant number because there are 91 days (again, according to Mannikka) between the winter solistice and the spring equinox. However, other authors (Freeman and Jacques, Roveda) quote the number of asuras as 92. Be that as it may, the way Mannikka counts things, the total number of devas + asuras + length of the equinox comes out to half a year, and the entire 150-foot-long relief can be read as a solar calendar. |
