Royal Procession of Suryavarman IIWest wing of south gallery
This relief depicts Suryavarman II, the builder of the temple. The king sits in state upon a naga-footed divan, surrounded by royal parasols, fans, and fly-whisks. The objects in his hands have not been convincingly identified. Mannikka (p.23) singles out this figure, with its squared-off jaw, flat face, narrow features, continuous eyebrows, and flared sampot (lower garment), as an exemplar of Angkor Wat style. The king's face seems more generic than portrait-like. |
