Principal Buddha Image

Buddhist Terrace, South of Victory Way
relocated: originally from the Bayon, Angkor Thom

The principal Buddha image of the Bayon was discovered in 1935, broken in pieces at the bottom of the Bayon's central shaft, into which Jayavarman VIII had thrown it. The statue was subsequently restored and relocated upon a terrace (lower photo), just south of the Victory Way and east of the South Khleang (map).

Comparison of the statue's current (2004) condition to the previous restoration, reveals major differences (upper photos). It would be interesting to know the restoration history of this object.
