The lack of skill of this artist renders an unintentionally comic effect ("Mars cops a feel"). Similar, but much more skillful, paintings are common in Roman art - Mars touching the breast of Venus was a popular theme, that might even have made its way in time all the way to India, as in Cave 29 of Ellora.
