Inner Shrine

The inner shrine of the image house, still completely enclosed by its original vaulted brick roof, is illuminated only by natural light from the cutout windows, and by the flickering light of devotional candles and oil-lamps. The thickness of the walls, as seen in the window here, accounts for the thousand-year-old shrine's excellent state of preservation.
