The royal palace of Parakramabahu I is difficult to imagine from the conserved remnants seen here; the seven-storied building contained numerous pillared rooms, including banqueting and dancing halls, all timbered, stuccoed, and painted; everything that a king would need to live like a king. The wooden-floored upper storeys have decayed long ago.
