Devundara Vishnu Shrine

Dondra, Sri Lanka

This cake-frosting, Vishnu-blue (or perhaps, Wedgwood-blue) devale is Late British Period in date, although built upon the ruins of a much earlier Vishnu temple (following pages). The shrine's form is traditional, with three slant-eaved storeys and an extended entrance hall (photo right). Compare: Lankatillaka Devale, in Kandy, which has the same basic form but with many differences in material and decoration.
