Buddha Protected By Mucalinda

Cave 5, Dambulla

Mucalinda is the multi-headed cobra (naga) who sheltered Buddha underneath his hoods during a storm. In this statue, the cobra seems quite aggressive, taking seriously his protective function.

The statues in Cave 5, which was constructed rather later than the others, are made of brick and plaster rather than rock (Rough Guide, p. 342).
