Jetavana Stupa

Anuradhapura

The stupa of Jetavana monastery (4th century AD; restored 12th century AD, and lately by UNESCO) originally stood at 400 ft high, the third tallest structure in the ancient world (the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre at Giza are slightly taller). It is a most impressive construction, reflecting both the impulses of faith, and the practical control of vast resources that enabled such an achievement.

The UNESCO World Heritage Emblem is inscribed upon a square post in front of the restored stupa.
