Citadel Excavation

Anuradhapura

This excavation, on Anuradhapura's citadel area, displays fifty feet of continuous stratification, representing about 7000 years of history, from the deepest layer (a lithic manufacturing site dated 5000 BC) to the present day. The Early Iron Age in Sri Lanka was first identified here. At the center right of the photo, one can see some water conduits from the 1st century BC.

The excavation presently supports a wide range of activities, from ongoing archaeological digs to school field trips.
