Ruwanvali Stupa

Mahavihara, Anuradhapura

Located just north of the Sri Maha Bodhi (previous page), the Ruwanvali Stupa is a magical sight in the evening. It was built by King Dutugemunu (161 - 137 BC) and remains a popular pilgrimage destination today (next page). It goes without saying that the present restoration of the stupa, in its glossy white cladding, is modern, although the remnants of Dutugemunu's original brick stupa remain enclosed inside its modern shell.
