Seonmyogak Paintings

Buseoksa Temple
Yeongju, Korea

These shrine paintings illustrate the legend of Seonmyo (previous page). Uisang's study visit to China, his development of Hwaeon Buddhism, and his foundation of Buseoksa Temple are all historical events, although treated here in a mythical fashion: (1) Seonmyo stands in front of her dragon and holds the flaming pearl of wisdom. (2) Seonmyo rides her dragon, who chases the pearl. (3) Seonmyo's dragon protects the boat of Uisang, while a Bodhisattva blesses from above. (4) Miracle of the Floating Rock.
