Josadang Shrine

Buseoksa Temple
Yeongju, Korea

Josadang is a shrine that is dedicated to Uisang, the founder of the temple. Its late-Goryeo painting of Brahmadeva (Brahma as a Buddhist divinity) is one of six frescos that were originally held there. Its other subjects are Indra and the Four Guardians. The frescoes are larger than life, each measuring about 205x75cm (6.7x2.5ft). Josadang's frescoes, now held in the temple museum, are collectively designated as National Treasure #46. Painted in 1377, they are among the oldest and finest examples of Goryeo painting in Korea.
