Namhansanseong Fortress
Gyeonggi, Korea

Located on Namhansan Mountain in Gyeonggi Province just SE of Seoul, Namhansanseong is a mountain fortress that played a part in Silla's conflict with Tang China (7th century) and Goryeo's war against Yuan China (13th century). Its largest development occured in the 17th century, when it briefly became a refuge for King Injo until his surrender to the Qing (1636). Downgraded during the Japanese occupation, it was restored beginning in the 1970s and received World Heritage status in 2014.
