Jagyeongjeon

Gyeongbokgung Palace
Seoul, Korea

Jagyeongjeon (#20 on the palace map) is an original 19th-century palace building. The residence of Dowager Queen Sinjeongwanghu, it was first constructed in 1865, burned down twice, and was reconstructed in 1888. Unlike the King's and Queen's Residences, this hall was spared by the 20th century Japanese occupiers.

The hall's south-facing porch provided a cool living space for the queen during the summer months. It is raised on stone piers and projects outwards from the hall, ensuring air circulation on three sides and beneath the floor.
