Junghwamun Gate

Deoksugung Palace
Seoul, Korea (Palace Map)

The interesting thing about Junghwamun is what it lacks: a palace gate would never be freestanding, as Junghwamun is today. It would be connected to an enclosing wall or corridor, so that the gate would be the only way to enter the compound from the front. In this case the original corridor was not reconstructed. Beyond the gate is Junghwajeon (next page), the hall for conducting formal government ceremonies.
