Daeungjeon (Main Hall)

Hwaeomsa Temple
Jirisan National Park, Korea

Hwaeomsa's Main Hall was reconstructed beginning in the 1630s, as the first step in restoring the temple after the Imjin War. It is a five-bay hall with a hip-and-gable roof, smaller than Gakhwangjeon. The five-story East Pagoda in front of the hall is undecorated, in contrast to the decorated West Pagoda (earlier page) in front of Gakhwangjeon. A similar (but much more elaborate) pair of pagodas, one decorated and one not, is also found at Bulguksa, so evidently this was a deliberate idea.
