Hyanggyo were a system of state-supported schools that educated the yangban elite in Confucian studies, in support of the Confucian revival in the Joseon period. The Jeonju hyanggyo was originally located at Gyeonggijeon, but moved to a nearby spot in 1603. The school's main shrine is devoted to Confucius and contains an altar to the Great Sage (next page). |
