One Thousand BuddhasUnjusa Temple
"One Thousand" statues of Buddha (in the sense of "many;" I have not actually counted them) pack one of the halls in Unjusa. This may refer to the original one thousand stone statues said to be on site during the 15th century, or it may also refer to the thousand buddhas manifested in the miracle at Sravasti and depicted in numerous temples in India and China. The statues are arranged here according to a definite scheme, with various standing and seated poses and gestures (lower photo). |
