9-Story Pagoda

Unjusa Temple
Hwasun County, Korea

The upper stories of this pagoda are carved with diamond-shaped designs in raised relief, each enclosing a four-lobed design, probably representing a double dorje. The bottom story is built in imitation of wood planking. The undersides of the story roofs are also carved, probably to represent wooden beams. The pagoda rests on a thick platform, like the other pagodas on site (except the one on the previous page). Across the path in this photo there are some Buddha statues (next page), worked in the naive style of flat relief that is typical of this site.
