Tomb of King Muryeong

Baekje, 523 AD
Songsan-ri Burial Mounds, Gongju, Korea

When Gongju was the capital of Baekje, its kings were buried here on Mt. Songsan. The entrance to tomb #7, the burial mound of King Muryeong (501-523) and his queen, is shown here; it was only discovered in 1971, during work on tombs #5 and #6 behind it.

Muryeong was a successful king who achieved several victories over Goguryeo, and sent diplomatic, trade, and cultural missions to Liang China and Japan.
