Taekwando MatchCeiling beam, Muyong Tomb, 5th century A.D.
Taekwando, the Korean form of karate, has a long history that reaches back at least to Gogoryeo, as proved by this scene from the Muyong tomb. The fighters' stance is said by modern practitioners to be recognizably close to the modern forms. The painting includes a "lucky cloud," like the hunting scene on the west wall, marking the scene as auspicious. The same mark is also included in the famous wrestling scene of Gakjeochong. |
