Ssangchung Stone MonumentsGwangseongbo Fortress, Korea These are two funeral monuments to Korean soldiers who fought against U.S. invaders during the Battle of Ganghwa in 1871. In one monument (upper photo), fifty-four defenders, all but three of them unnamed, are buried commingled in seven mounds. A separate monument (lower photo) honors the two Korean leaders, General Eo Jae-Yeon and his brother Eo Jae-Sun. Both monuments were erected in 1873. Each year, a memorial service is held here. |
