Five Gates

Tongdosa Temple (map)
Yangsan, Korea

Five gates, that are shown on this page, climb up the mountain from E to W as one drives or hikes up to the temple. The gate in the top photo is a modern government construction that is, basically, a tollbooth.

A short drive through the park brings the visitor to the second gate, also modern and government-controlled, that marks the entrance to the current legal boundary of the temple as I understand it.

From there, a pleasant walk of a mile or so leads up to Iljumun, the traditional "First Gate" of the temple itself, near which there are buildings concerned with secular administration, a museum, and so on.

Continuing west up the mountain, one finally passes through Cheongwangmun, the Four Guardians Gate, and into the sacred area of the temple (East Courtyard).

After traversing the East Courtyard, the visitor passes through the Non-Duality Gate into the temple's West Courtyard, Tongdosa's spiritual heart with its worship hall and ordination platform.
