Underglaze Painted Celadon WareGoryeo, 12th c.
These celadon vessels, a maebyeong (l.) and a teardrop-shaped bottle (r.), are decorated with underglaze painted slip, not inlay as on the previous page. The maebyeong underpainting is an iron slip. When fired in an oxidizing atmosphere, the iron turns black and the celadon body turns brown. The bottle on the right is painted with a black slip and fired in a normal reducing atmosphere. |
