MaebyeongGoryeo, 12th c.
Inlaid celadon (sanggam) is made by first cutting a design into the semi-dried clay body of the vessel, and then filling it with two colors of slip (a thin clay mixture). Firing the vessel then bakes the two-colored design into its celadon background. The maebyeong (Chinese meiping) shown here is decorated with cranes and water plants, with a Greek-key border around the foot of the vessel. |
