Standing Maitreya from Gunsu-ri, T 330Baekje, 6th Century Gilt bronze, 11.2cm (4.4 in) tall Buyeo National Museum The Buddha of the Future is standing in tribhanga, his left leg slightly forward and hip subtly cocked, in this early piece. His costume includes X-shaped swags crossed over the stomach, U-shaped folds from the knees to the lower legs, and descending "fins" on either side of the body. The face is full and rounded. This style is characteristic of early Baekje art, and influenced Asuka art in Japan (Guze Kannon), following Baekje diplomatic and religious missions there. |
