Standing Avalokiteshvara, NT 293

Baekje, 1st half of 7th Century
Gilt bronze, 20.9cm (8.25in) tall
Buyeo National Museum

The figure of Avalokiteshvara, Bodhisattva of Compassion, stands upon a lotus pedestal. His crown contains an image of Amitabha, and his right hand holds a wish-granting jewel. The modeling of this, and other religious figures, greatly influenced the Asuka style of sculpture in Japan (example), after Baekje introduced Buddhism to that country in the mid-sixth century.
