Buddha Land Statues

Cheongnyeonam Hermitage
Beomeosa Temple
Busan, Korea

A large outdoor display of modern bronze statues evokes a Buddhist paradise, where Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, monks, guardians, and apsarasas bask in the radiance of the divine.

Lacking information about the program of this sculptural group, I am not going to speculate much about who the central Buddha might be. Vairocana comes to mind just because he is strongly represented in the rest of the temple. The statue is holding an orb in its right hand; the left holds a lotus branch, at the top of which there is seated a small Buddha.

These two statues can be identified with certainty: Guanyin on the left, and Maitreya on the right. Because of their placement they seem to be contemplating the radiant display, rather than to be a direct part of it.
