Hahoe Masked Dance

Masked dance in Hahoe is said to have started sometime in the Goryeo dynasty; its purpose was to promote social unity by allowing villagers to confront their disputes with satire and humor. The characters are familiar types such as Bride, Scholar, Noble, and Monk. The Hahoe tradition continues today with an annual festival.
