Stylite Tower

Umm ar-Rasas, Jordan

This Byzantine tower may have been used as a retreat for a hermit monks (stylites). It had a room at the top but was otherwise solid inside. Food and drink, for the inhabitant, would have to be drawn up in a basket. The tower is currently in ruinous shape, being cracked from top to bottom as seen here.
