Nabataean Kiln

Petra, Jordan

This two-chambered kiln was excavated near the Movenpick hotel, and dates to the Nabataean period (1st - 6th centuries AD). A fire was lit in the near chamber, and the pots were placed in the far chamber. This kept the pots away from the flames, which would otherwise have damaged the clay (Art of Jordan, p. 83).
