Church conversion

Urn Tomb, Petra

The ground-floor interior of the tomb was converted into a church in A.D. 446-447, according to an inscription found inside. The church's central apse is seen here, flanked by two side apses, all constructed at the time of the tomb's conversion. On the floor there are holes to anchor church furnishings like the chancel screen, pulpit, tables, etc.; the holes in the wall carried hooks for such things as icons, lamps, and tapestries.
