South Arcade

West Church, Umm al-Jimal, Jordan

An arcade, a series of arches supported on piers, separates the nave of the church from the side aisle. It is seen here from inside the church. A Greek cross (next page) is carved into the underside of the left arch. The wall above is pierced by clerestory windows, one of which is seen in the photo.

Umm al-Jimal has about fifteen churches, one for every 200 people. The churches were built in the 6th century AD.
