Model of the Dome of a Bath

Hisham bin Abd al-Malik palace,
Khirbet al Mafjar, Jericho
Umayyad, 661 - 750 A.D.
Archaeological Museum, Amman, Jordan

This is a plaster copy, in reduced scale, of the dome of a bath that belonged to an Umayyad palace in Jericho. At the center of an elaborate vegetal tracery, six human heads (nature spirits?) surround a central flower – a striking and curious motif.
