Uenohara Jomon Village
Kagoshima, Japan
Uenohara is a new archaeological park and interpretive center. At the time of our visit (October 2000), it was still under construction, and it didn't appear in most guidebooks. As an illustration of the scale of Japanese archaeology, we were told that the annual budget for this site alone is something like six million dollars, and that the total annual budget for archaeology in Japan, in the mid-1990's, was around 800 million dollars.
