Abbot's Quarters

Ryoan-ji Temple
Kyoto, Japan

Ryoan-ji means "Peaceful Dragon Temple." The front of this room, in the Hojo (Abbot's Quarters), is decorated with painted dragons. On the rear fusuma (sliding screens), shown here, the painting is of a sinuous, twisting tree that resembles a dragon. In the distance is the altar room.
