Harvest Festival

This colorful festival was held on October 14, 2000 on the grounds of Horyuji Temple. Japanese matsuri (festivals) are often, as here, an occasion for high spirits and displays of athleticism. Carts packed with young children are carried about on the straining backs of the young men, and some jostling of rival carts is part of the fun.
