Relief of Amida

Kiyomizu Magaibutsu
Kawabe (Minamikyushu), Kagoshima

This raised relief of Amida (Amitabha, Buddha of the Western Paradise) was carved by priest Yoshida Chizan in 1895. The rays extending from his halo are typical iconography of this Buddha. His hands are portrayed in "fear not" (left) and "giving" (right) mudras, as he stands upon a lotus throne to welcome believers.
