Izumo Taisha

This pavement displays an unusual tiling of the plane, in which a regular grid of perfectly repeating geometrical units is infilled by an irregular pattern of tiny stones. If you want to understand in real, tangible terms how the thought of East Asia is different from the West, this is an outstanding example.
