Apsaras

Horyuji Temple
Ikaruga, Japan

One of the best sculptures in Horyuji's Golden Hall is not easy to see: an apsaras (heavenly musician) that perches high on the canopy of the ceiling. He is playing a kind of lute - called a Biwa in Japan, and a Pipa in China.
